The teen-induced meltdown

The meltdown I wrote about in The Mother of All Meltdowns took place a million years ago. Ok, it happened over eight years ago, when my kids were four and seven. So many mommy meltdowns occur as the result of parenting young children, but a mom meltdown caused by a teenager is a whole different animal.

I no longer have meltdowns because of things my children do. Now I lose my cool because of things they say, and the attitude with which they say it. I’ve learned to pick my battles, and not react to every snide comment that they utter. It’s not my parenting style, although I’m sure some may say I let them get away with too much. I just don’t feel like berating them every five minutes; frankly, it’s exhausting. And the more I nitpick, the faster they tune me out.

That’s not to say I let them talk freshly to me. That behavior isn’t tolerated, but I don’t always handle fresh talk in a calm and quiet manner. It sometimes goes a little like this:
