How to Text Like a Teenager

Wanna feel old fast? Read a teenager’s Facebook page or text messages, and realize that you don’t understand what the hell she is talking about. That is most likely due to all the abbreviations and acronyms that are now a part of the English language – at least if you are under the age of 20.

If you have a tween or a teenager, you may be familiar with many of these shortcuts. If you don’t, my very own teen has provided me with a list of frequently used text abbreviations, so you can pretend that you are young and cool again.

Or not. I caution you against using too many of these  – you will sound like a teenage wannabe, which is frankly kinda pathetic. Just speak in full words and text with one finger, like a normal adult.
Want to text like a teenager? Here's a cheat sheet of text abbreviations.

1. BRB – Be right back

2. GTG – Got to go

3. IDK – I don’t know

4. IDC – I don’t care

5. IKR – I know, right?

6. ILY – I love you

7. TBH – To be honest

8. CYA – See ya*

9. BTW – By the way
said as BTDubs (dubs for W)

10. BBY – Baby

The last one I thought was ridiculous – text abbreviations for one measly letter? But I was then informed that BBY is used as a term of non-romantic endearment between two girl friends. As in “ILY, BBY!”  Totally platonic love of a good friend.

*I also thought that CYA meant “cover your ass,” but apparently it has taken on a new meaning with the younger set.

So there you have it. BTW, if this post made you LOL or even better ROFLMAO, then ILY BBY. If not, then OMG – TBH, IDC. GTG – TTYL!

This post was originally published last April, when I only had one teenager texting. I now have two, and I confirmed with the younger one that these abbreviations are still in use.
